7th Grade Science Plans for December 4th through 8th, 2017

Greetings!

Hope you had a nice weekend--Here's what we will be doing in Science this week:

MONDAY--Students will work on writing a summary of an article in class.  This is HOMEWORK DUE TUESDAY.

TUESDAY--Students will be writing the procedure for Investigation 3.2, so NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--Students will be carrying out Investigation 3.2 in class.  So again, NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will be writing on a summary on an article from the STC (the name of the Science program we use) website.  It is HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY.

FRIDAY--Students will carry out Investigation 3.3, so NO HOMEWORK.

As you look over your student's progress report, please be on the lookout for missing assignments.  Nothing brings down a grade like a "0"; even an "F" is worth some points.  If you see an assignment that is missing, please discuss it with your student and maybe even make arrangements for that student to stay after school, come in early (I'm usually here by 7:30 a.m.) or make the work up during lunchtime.  Thanks!

I'm sure you have already made plans for our "Late Start" on Wednesday morning--just thought I'd remind you.

If you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

6th Grade Science Plans for December 4th through 8th, 2017

Greetings!

Hope you had a nice weekend--Here's what we will be doing in Science this week:

MONDAY--Students will be working on a worksheet entitled "Electricity Match Up".  This is HOMEWORK DUE TUESDAY.

TUESDAY--Students will be adding to the notes in their Science Notebooks, so NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--Students will be doing some work on their Chromebooks at the STC website. (That's the name of our Science program.)  So again, NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will be working on an assignment called "Keeping Current & Electrifying Facts".  It is HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY.

FRIDAY--Students will start working on their "Static Electricity Labs", so NO HOMEWORK.

Probably next Thursday, students will be taking the ELECTRICITY UNIT TEST.  Since this will be worth 100 points, it's not too early to start studying.  All of the notes we've taken in the Science Notebooks is a good place to start.  And reviewing the slideshow I emailed your student (entitled "Electricity Slide Show") is a good idea, too.  Making flashcards, oral drill, etc are all wonderful strategies.  Thank you for your support.

7th Grade Science Plans for November 13th through 17th, 2017

Greetings!

No, I did not fall off the face of the Earth!  You're still stuck with me.  Sorry I didn't post last week--with being gone and half days and conferences, there just were not enough hours in the day.  So here is what we are doing this week:

MONDAY--Students created data tables in their Science Notebooks and began Investigation 2.2, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--Students completed Investigation 2.2, so again NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--LATE START DAY--We will hold our "End of the Quarter Auction"  (Bring in those Humble Bucks!) and elect our new treasurer and vice treasurer, so again NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will get back several assignments, and will REVIEW FOR THE RETAKE OF THE PROCEDURE TEST.  For students who choose to retake the test, it WILL COUNT ON THEIR QUARTER #1 REPORT CARD GRADE.

FRIDAY--Students will RETAKE THE PROCEDURE WRITING TEST.  NO HOMEWORK.

For those of you that I had the opportunity to meet with during conferences, I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did.  If you were unable to attend and would still like one, feel free to contact me, and we will set one up.  Let's begin Quarter #2 with a fresh start!

With the exception of the Procedure Writing Test on Friday, the grades you see on this progress report pretty much reflect "What you see is what you get" on the first quarter report card.  Since today is the last day of "Quarter #1", it's too late for missing work, test retakes, and/or extra credit.  Look for this report card to be printed up and sent home in about a week.

I'm sure you are well aware that WEDNESDAY IS A LATE START DAY, so I'm also certain that you have planned ahead for it.

As we start the new quarter, as always please contact me with any questions, comments and/or concerns you may have.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

MONDAY--Students got back previous assignments and we went over them in class, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--Students participated in a lab entitled: "Not-So-Tall Circuit".  The last question is HOMEWORK DUE WEDNESDAY.

WEDNESDAY--LATE START DAY--We will hold our "End of the Quarter Auction"  (Bring in those Humble Bucks!) and elect our new treasurer and vice treasurer, so again NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will participate in a lab entitled: "Conductors and Insulators".  This will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, so NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will reflect in their Science Notebooks on this week's labs.  These will be done in class, so NO HOMEWORK.

For those of you that I had the opportunity to meet with during conferences, I hope you enjoyed them as much as I did.  If you were unable to attend and would still like one, although it's too late to do anything about Quarter #1's grade (See below), feel free to contact me, and we will set one up.  Let's begin Quarter #2 with a fresh start!

6th Grade Science Plans for Oct. 30th through Nov. 3rd, 2017

Greetings!

Well, I'm making some headway in getting caught up with the grading!  Please be patient with me--I will get there.  Now here is what we are doing this week:

MONDAY, TUESDAY, & WEDNESDAY--Students will work on their "Plant ID Slide Show".  Although they will have three full days in class to work on this, it should be considered HOMEWORK DUE THURSDAY.

THURSDAY--Students will work with equipment to construct electrical circuits in a lab setting, so NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will watch a video and will fill out an accompanying worksheet.  This will be corrected in class and will be TURNED IN AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, so NO HOMEWORK.

Notice that this Wednesday is NOT a "Late Start Day" (ACT).  I think that is because all of next week will be early release days due to conferences (Monday through Thursday, November 6th through 9th).  Also, there will be no school that Friday (November 10th) due to the Veteran's Day holiday.

I will be gone this Friday (November 3rd) and Monday (November 6th).  However, I will be back in time for the evening conferences on Tuesday, November 7th.  Although other teachers will not be in the building after release time (11:40 a.m.) on Thursday, I will be available if you would like to conference then.

As always, if you have anything you would like to discuss, please contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is:

7th Grade Science Plans for Oct. 30th through Nov. 3rd, 2017

Greetings!

Well, I'm making some headway in getting caught up with the grading!  Please be patient with me--I will get there.  Now here is what we are doing this week:

MONDAY--Students will complete calculations from last week's "Investigation 2.1 Part B", so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--We will go over the "Procedure Writing Quiz", then students will answer questions from the text in their Science Notebooks, so NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--Lab groups will write the procedure for Investigation 2.2, so NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Lab groups will carry out the experiment they wrote the procedure for yesterday, so NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will be introduced to the "Speed Triangle" and will work on an accompanying worksheet.  This is HOMEWORK DUE TUESDAY.

As you can see from your student's grade on the "Procedure Writing Quiz", he/she may have bombed it.  I was both surprised and disappointed in the responses I received.  I will try to devise a "Retest", so students who want to may retake this test.

As always, if you have anything you would like to discuss, please contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is:

7th Grade Science Plans for October 23rd through 27th, 2017

Greetings!

Well, we all managed to survive Outdoor School!  But it sure feels great to be back in "civilization", so here is what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY--Students will write reflections in their Science Notebooks about the labs we did in Chapter/Lesson #1.  These will be done in class, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--Students will read the introductory pages for Chapter/Lesson #2.  NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--Students will do "Investigation 2.1 Part A" (this is a lab), so NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will do "Investigation 2.1 Part B" (the rest of the lab), so NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will read the "Forces & Motion" selection in their textbooks and answer the questions on page 20 #2 (a-e) in their Science Notebook. These should be completed in class, so NO HOMEWORK.

I know you are seeing "NO HOMEWORK" a lot up above, however, I am planning on GRADING SCIENCE NOTEBOOKS OVER THE WEEKEND.  These will be worth 100 points, so please make sure your student has stayed caught up with his/her entries.

I hope to get several other assignments entered into Skyward this week, and as we get closer to the end of this first quarter, if I notice that your student is receiving a failing grade due to missing assignments, I will be contacting you to see if "Saturday School" is a possibility.  Thank you for your support on this.

Just a reminder: If you would like to schedule a conference, please contact the TMS Office at 360-264-3600.  The evening conferences fill up quickly, so call quickly if you need one of those.

Please contact me if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns.  The phone number in my classroom is 360-264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

6th Grade Science Plans for October 23rd through 27th, 2017

Greetings!

Well, we all managed to survive Outdoor School!  Hopefully your sixth grader had a terrific time; I know I sure did!  I'll bet your student spent a great deal of time sleeping over the weekend--we were plenty busy up there.  But now it's back to "civilization", so here is what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY--Each student will receive his/her "Outdoor School Student Handbook" and will begin recording their reflections.  These will be DUE THURSDAY.

TUESDAY--Students will take the "Outdoor School Plant Identification Post Test".  This will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.  They will have the rest of the time to work on their "ODS Student Handbooks", which will be DUE THURSDAY.

WEDNESDAY--Students will begin working on their "Plant Identification Research Worksheets".  These will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD ON FRIDAY.

THURSDAY--Students who wish to RETAKE THE ELECTRICITY QUIZ will be allowed to do so.  Afterward, students will fill out the "Outdoor School Evaluation Form".  This will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.

FRIDAY--Students will have more time to work on their "Plant Identification Research Worksheets".  These will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.  NO HOMEWORK OVER THE WEEKEND.

As you can see above, your student will have the opportunity to RETAKE THE ELECTRICITY QUIZ on Thursday, October 26th.  Please look this progress report over and find your child's score on the quiz.  If either you or your sixth grader is not satisfied with the grade, please encourage him/her to UPDATE & STUDY THEIR NOTES prior to retaking the quiz.  I emailed the slide show to your student prior to the quiz, so he/she should still have it.  It would be very helpful if you could look over the notes your student has recorded in his/her Science Notebook.  Remember:  your sixth grader CAN USE THESE NOTES ON THE QUIZ.

6th Grade Science Plans for October 16th through 20th, 2017

Greetings!

Well, big day on Tuesday!  Hope you’re all packed for Cispus.  Mrs. Schall, some of the high school counselors, and myself went up there today (Sunday), and it looks great.  Even though the weather forecast for this week isn’t the greatest, I’m sure we are all looking forward to making some “moist memories”.  Here are the plans for the week:

MONDAY—Students will take a “Plant Identification PreTest”.  This will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY—Leave for Cispus!

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY—Have fun at Cispus!

FRIDAY—Return from Cispus!

Hopefully you have made plans to take your student to school on Tuesday morning.  It is very difficult to handle luggage, a sleeping bag, etc. on a school bus.  And, if at all possible, please arrange to have your student picked up on Friday.  We should get back around 2:30 p.m.  Besides handling all that gear, your student will be extremely tired, and not up to facing a school bus ride home.  Thank you!

Last week your student took notes in his/her Science Notebook from the “Electricity Slide Show” I electronically sent him/her.  It appeared the students were doing a great job, so I gave a quiz on the material on Thursday.  Students were ALLOWED TO USE THEIR NOTES on the quiz.  I was very surprised at how poorly the students did.  This week will be crazy, but NEXT WEEK after we return from Cispus, I will allow students to RETAKE THE TEST.  This will probably be Tuesday, October 24th or Wednesday, October 25th).  Please have your student bring home his/her Science Notebook for you to look over.  You can compare what your student has written with the slide presentation; I also attached it to the “Message Center”.  Thank you for your support on this matter.

Even though it won’t impact us up at Cispus, just a reminder that Wednesday, October 18th is a LATE START DAY.  If you have any other students enrolled in the Tenino School District, hopefully you have planned accordingly.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

Have a wonderful week,

7th Grade Science Plans for October 16th through 20th, 2017

Greetings!

Well, this will be a big week for me--as of Tuesday, I'm off to Cispus with this year's sixth graders.(Remember last year?)  Either Mrs. Haupert (6th period) or Mr. Bowerly (7th period) will be covering my seventh grade Science classes.  Here is what I have planned for them:

MONDAY & TUESDAY--Students will continue working on the "Lesson #1 Labs".  The worksheet will be DUE THURSDAY AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.

WEDNESDAY--LATE START DAY--Students will watch a video on "Energy" and will fill out a worksheet that goes along with it, so NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Last day to complete the "Lesson #1 Labs".  Worksheets will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.  NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will take a quiz on "Procedure Writing".  It will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.  NO HOMEWORK.

Even though it won't affect me up at Cispus, just a reminder that Wednesday is a LATE START DAY for you.  Hopefully, you have planned accordingly.

6th Grade Science Plans for October 2nd through 6th, 2017

Greetings!

I have a pile of Sixth Grade Science work I need to correct and enter in this grade book, but I felt it was more important to get my little weekly "newsletter" out to you.  I may send another progress report later this week with grades only one it.  So now on to what we are doing this week:

MONDAY--Students watched a video on atoms and did a worksheet that went along with it, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--Atom Video Worksheet was corrected in class & turned in.  Students also received their Outdoor School Student Handbooks, hence, NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--LATE START--Students will start taking notes on the Student Handbook.  These notes will be DUE FRIDAY, but there will be more time to work on them in class.

THURSDAY--Last day to work on ODS (OutDoor School) Student Handbook notes IN CLASS.  Any notes that are not completed in class are HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY.

FRIDAY--Review notes in class & turn them in.  NO HOMEWORK.

I'm sure you are already aware that Wednesday is a Late Start Day, and have planned accordingly, but just in case.......

A great big Cispus "thank you" to Christi & Rich Dallaire (David's parents), Nicole Scibelli (Sophia's mom), Jessica Palmer (Jordan's mom), and Amy Hussey (Sophia's mom) for coming in and laboring long and hard on the Student Handbooks for Outdoor School.  They managed to finish them in one day plus one hour!  And they look terrific!  Now I beg for your patience--they WILL be coming home (probably early next week), but I want to go over them in class, as you can see from the above plans.  I will attach the Student Handbook to the "Message Center", so you can view it there if you need a "sneak peak".  I AM sending the "What to Bring to Outdoor School" page with them, so you can get a head start on packing.  More to come shortly.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

Have a wonderful week,

6th Grade Science Plans for September 11th through 15th, 2017

Greetings!

Well, we have made it through an entire week!  Hip, hip, hooray!  For those of you who may not know me, I am Michele Humble, your student's Science teacher.  I try very hard to email progress reports home weekly, let you know what to expect in class for that week, and to inform you of important upcoming events............So let's get started!

MONDAY--Students will watch a slide presentation on this Science class, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--Student groups will finish working on their "CHAMPS Chart".  These are DUE ON THURSDAY.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY--Students will work on setting up their Science Notebooks.  These are HOMEWORK DUE ON FRIDAY.

FRIDAY--Students will elect their class treasurer & vice treasurer, so NO HOMEWORK.

Outdoor School is just around the corner--October 17th through 20th.  This is our sixth grade experience at CISPUS, just outside of Randal.  There will be an informational night soon, so be on the lookout for upcoming details.  We will need just a few parent volunteers to actually go up to CISPUS.  A nurse is always our #1 need, so if you have a medical background, we would really like to talk with out ASAP.  For those of you who would like to help out, but can't take four days off of work, we have several things we need help with prior to our departure date, such as assembling the student handbook (large project--about 9 hours for just one person, about 3 hours for three), picking up and pre-washing the white tee shirts we tie-dye at CISPUS, help with inventorying all of the supplies & equipment we take up to ODS (OutDoor School), purchasing the evening snacks, etc.  Mrs. Schall is the one to call, as she is taking over as director this year.  More details shortly!

Just a reminder that Thursday, September 14th is "Picture Day".  Your student should have received an informational packet is his/her 7th period class on Tuesday, so you may want to be on the lookout for it.

The PTA is staging a fundraising dance on Friday, September 15th, starting at 7:00 p.m.  If your student has an A.S.B. card, the cost is $5.00, without I believe it is $6.00.  You can go to the middle school website for more details.

If you have any questions, comments, and or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us  Please do NOT attempt to email me through Skyward--it is next to impossible to get through, and sometimes I don't receive your email at all.  Our school district system is the best.

Have a wonderful week,
Michele Humble
