7th Grade Science Plans for November 26-30, 2018

Greetings!

No, I did not fall off of the face of the Earth--it's just with grading 138 Science Notebooks, then a week of conferences, followed by a short holiday week, I wasn't able to do my weekly updates.  Sorry about that.  Let's hope it doesn't happen again.  Now here is what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY--We will cover articles on layers of the Earth and epicenters & focus orally in class.  So NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY-- We will introduce Chapter #4 with a reading ("Will It Happen Again?"), will work on Investigation 4.1 by researching earthquake locations using maps, latitude, longitude, and Chromebooks.  This assignment will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD THURSDAY, so NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--We will celebrate the end of the first quarter with our auction, so NO HOMEWORK.

For those of you I was able to conference with, the pleasure was all mine.  After all of my years in teaching, I have learned great kids come great parents.  Thank you for being there--conference week is my third favorite week of the school year.  (Sorry!  Bus Cispus is always #1 and Student Led Conference Week is #2.)

As always, if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  The best email address to reach me is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us and the phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644.

6th Grade Science Plans for October 29th through November 2nd

Greetings!

Wow, am I glad we didn't have this weather up at Cispus!  When it comes to weather, we were lucky!  Now here is what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY--Students should complete the "Earth's Heat & Vocabulary Test" in class.  Also, they need to read "Water:  Kind of a Big Deal" and do the worksheet that goes with it.  This is HOMEWORK DUE TUESDAY.

TUESDAY--Students will add some vocabulary words to their Science Notebooks, read an article on the Water Cycle, and add a diagram to their Science Notebooks, so NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--We're going to have a little fun by watching an episode of "Mythbusters" (the ultimate in utilizing the Scientific Method), so NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will carry out Day #1 of Investigation 3.2, so again NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will complete Investigation 3.2 for Day #2, so NO HOMEWORK.

I was VERY disappointed in the student's scores on the "Earth's Heat & Vocabulary Test".  Students were to read the article, take notes on it in their Science Notebooks, then were allowed to use those notes on the test.  So here is what I will do:  Students may RETAKE the test, however there are some requirements--

1.)  Students must show me at least THREE PAGES OF NOTES on the article in their Science Notebooks before they can retake the test
2.)  Students must show me the 15 vocabulary words defined in their Science Notebooks prior to retaking the test
3.)  Students must schedule the test retake on their own time--this means BEFORE SCHOOL (I am in my classroom by 7:30 a.m. every morning), AFTER SCHOOL (I will stay until at least 4:00 p.m. each day), or during their lunch
4.)  Test retakes must be COMPLETED BY FRIDAY, November 2nd

I think this is fair, so if you want your student to retake the test, please encourage him/her to make arrangements soon.

If you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

Outdoor School Day #2

Greetings from Outdoor School!

Sorry this is so late--we have had a busy, busy, busy day!  Weather continues to be beautiful and even warm.  Another full day of classes with no major injuries or problems.  The kids love the food, cabin inspections have been a friendly competition, and our high school counselors get stronger everyday.

Two other small schools have joined us on the Cispus campus, but everyone is getting along nicely; we are all working well together.  We share the dining hall, campfire area, and gym--taking turns using eh facilities. Their students are considerably younger (3rd grade), so there is one parent for every child.  We have received several compliments on how well behaved our students are--they reflect very well on our Tenino community.

Tonight cabin groups will present their skits, so there's some nervousness in the air--it will be fun to see them perform.  We have some very creative dramatic creations on the horizon.

Tomorrow (Friday) will be a bit crazy, so don't look for another update from me--Sorry!  We should be leaving Cispus at about 10:30 a.m., visiting the Mossyrock Dam (we actually will drive across the top of the highest dam in Washington State), then have our lunches at their park before returning home.  Look for us to arrive at the middle school at about 2:30 p.m.  Please have someone there to pick up your student--they will be bone tired and fighting with all of their gear, so that will be a recipe for disaster riding their regular buses home.

See you tomorrow,
Michele Humble  (AKA "Trekker")

Outdoor School Day #1

Greetings from Outdoor School!

Just wanted to let you know we arrived safely and without incident yesterday, and Cispus is running smoothly.  The weather both yesterday and today has been amazing; clear, sunny, and even on the warm side for this time of year.  It's nice that the students who are on the Layser Cave field study are able to view several peaks that we have never been able to see before!  Have heard a rumor that this wonderful weather is supposed to hold until our return; let's hope so!

We have extremely hardworking high school counselors, and all of the cabin groups seem to be doing well.  Even had every cabin group asleep by 10:00 p.m.--and that NEVER happens on the first night.  Those high school students are doing an amazing job; you will hear all about them when we return.  (Please remember to have someone at the middle school at about 2:30 p.m. to pick up your student and his/her gear.  Riding the bus home after four full days at Cispus is stressful and exhausting--thank you!)

Field studies (classes) are in full swing.  Students are learning how to use a map & compass, identify plants, are visiting the Layser Cave, tie dying their own t-shirts, building fires & shelters, and are engaged in archery.  And of course there are recreations in the evening to be involved it; these included activities out in the field last night, basketball in the gym, a movie, board games, arts & crafts, and writing in their journals.  Busy, busy, busy!

Last night's evening activity was relays in the gym--friendly, noisy, competitions.  I think everyone had fun and no one got hurt.  A highlight was sixth graders receiving the mail that you have sent up; makes for a really special event.  Tonight we have campfire to look forward to--Fun!

No injuries--had a student go home who had a preexisting  condition, but we are hopeful that he will be returning for the rest of his stay.  Had one of our parent volunteers have a medical issue; she needed to leave, but hopefully will make a full recovery .  That means we are down one in the kitchen, but we are making it work.  Otherwise, we are doing fine medically.

Cassie has posted some pictures on Facebook (Thank you, Mrs. Tafoya!), so if you want to scan for your child, you might want to check this out.  I will warn you, we are all moving so fast here, you might only see a blur.  Who knows, you might recognize the clothes?

Please ignore the grades right now.  Even though some students have turned in so late and/or missing assignments, I have not had time to grade them.  Maybe this week-end?

Have a wonderful week,
Michele Humble (AKA "Trekker")

Missing Work Video

Greetings!

I know I just emailed progress reports yesterday, but Mr. Palmer shared this video with our sixth grade students.  (And, yes, I know I am sending this to my seventh grade parents, too.  They will certainly benefit from watching this!)  Even though your student may have already seen this, please sit down  and WATCH IT TOGETHER.  It's only about five minutes long (sorry about the last being a "commercial" for this company).  It does an excellent job explaining what missing assignments do to a student's grade.  It would be helpful if you discussed it after watching it, too.

As we draw closer to Outdoor School/Cispus (Tuesday, October 16th through Friday, October 19th) we find ourselves looking for a large trailer to haul up all of the gear.  If you know of anyone who would be willing to loan us one, or if you own one yourself and would let us borrow it for that week, please contact us as soon a possible.  It's just another one of those items we would be able to cross off our "To Do" list.  Thanks.

Several parents/guardians have asked about extra credit.  If you could please look at Slide #15 I sent in the "Sixth Grade Science" slide show, it will give you some ideas.  I'm kind of swamped right now, so it would be very helpful and would save both of us some time if you could take a peek at it.  Thank you.

Hopefully you have made arrangements for Wednesday morning's "Late Start".  Instead of students coming in to the building at 8:00 a.m., they will be arriving at 10:00 a.m.--two hours later than usual.

If you see that your student is missing the ""Syllabus/Lab Safety Contract", and you know you signed it, that could be because only one side was signed.  Several of them came in that way.  Because they are two separate documents, each one needs to be signed.  (I was trying to save paper.)  If your student's came in with only one side signed, I will be returning it to him/her fro the missing signature.  Hopefully those will arrive on Tuesday with both sides completed.  Thank you for your support on this.

Please contact me with any questions, comments, and/or concerns you may have.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

7th Grade Science Notebooks!

Yikes!  I forgot something important!  I will be grading the Science Notebooks this weekend--they are due on Friday, June 15th.  They will be worth 100 points, so that could impact your student's grade big time.  There should be eleven separate items in them--I will attach the list to the Message Center.

Sorry,
Michele Humble

7th Grade Science Plans for June 11th through 15th, 2018

Greetings!

Hooray!  I am all caught up on my grading!  There is nothing in the "Hand In Basket" for me to enter into Skyward, so the grades you see in this progress report are absolutely accurate.  I still need to enter the "Extra Credit" work I have received, but that can only help a grade go up; it cannot go down due to extra credit.  It is getting very close to "What You See Is What You Get" grade-wise.

Now here is what we are doing this week:

MONDAY, TUESDAY, & WEDNESDAY--Students will do research on our solar system.  This packet is HOMEWORK DUE THURSDAY.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY--Students will work on missing assignments, or if they have none, I have a special project for them.  All work is DUE FRIDAY.

Also, as the end of the quarter nears, you need to know that the LAST DAY FOR LATE WORK, MISSING ASSIGNMENTS, and/or EXTRA CREDIT IS FRIDAY, JUNE 15.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please contact me.  The best email to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us and the phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644.

Now here is what we are doing this week:

MONDAY--Students participate in Investigation 5.1 and TURN IN THE WORKSHEET AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.  So there should be no homework.

TUESDAY--Students go over the "Air Current Quiz" they took on Friday, add information on it to their Science Notebooks, and watch a video on severe weather (tornadoes, hurricanes, & thunderstorms), so NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--Students will read an article on severe weather and will do a worksheet on it.  This is HOMEWORK DUE THURSDAY.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY--Students will work on a project on clouds.  This will be DUE ON MONDAY.

I was very disappointed in the scores on the "Air Current Quiz" that was taken last Friday.  I will allow students to retake this quiz AT LUNCH ON WEDNESDAY OR FRIDAY, or AFTER SCHOOL WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY.

Also, as the end of the quarter nears, you need to know that the LAST DAY FOR LATE WORK, MISSING ASSIGNMENTS, and/or EXTRA CREDIT IS FRIDAY, JUNE 15.

6th Grade Plans for June 4th through 8th, 2018

Greetings!

Sorry I'm late this week--between testing the 8th Graders on the State Science test and fighting one heck of a cold (Who gets a cold at THIS time of year?), I'm behind.  My sincere apologies!

Now here is what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY--Students will go over the background for tomorrow's lab.  NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--Students will work on the lab for Investigation 4.1.  The worksheet that goes with it is DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, so NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--Students will watch a video on the Wind, then will read an article about it, so NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will be taking notes on an article about the wind.  This will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, so NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will be taking a QUIZ on the lab they did on Tuesday and the notes they took yesterday (Thursday), so NO HOMEWORK.

Now that the State Testing has come to an end, our most sincere thanks for your support.  The "early returns" we have received have been really good--and we know this didn't just happen.  Thank you for doing your part to make our students successful.

As this term winds down, some students have "gone on vacation early" by not turning in their work, so some grades are sagging.  Bad timing--you don't relax at the end of the race, you pour it on.  We do have SATURDAY SCHOOL this weekend (June 9th) from 8:00 a.m. to noon.  If you see that your student is failing Science, you can expect a phone call or email from me--or you can take the initiative and call the Office (360-264-3600) and request that your student attend.  Thank you for your support on this.

Please contact me with any questions, comments, and/or concerns you may have.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

7th Grade Science Plans for May 28th through June 1st, 2018

Greetings!

Hope you had a terrific three day weekend!  We even had wonderful weather--how often does that happen?  Now here is what we are doing this week:

MONDAY--Memorial Day--No School

TUESDAY--Students carry out Investigation 3.2 and record observations in their Science Notebooks.  NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--Students pair up in "Sharing Circles" to share their information from yesterday.  NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY-- Students will be introduced to Lesson #4 and will record answers in their Science Notebooks.  NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will watch a video on Seasons and will complete worksheets that go with it.
This should be COMPLETED IN CLASS, if not it will be HOMEWORK DUE MONDAY.

Students are continuing on their SBA Testing in Math this week.  Please make sure they get a good night's sleep the night before testing and eat well before coming to school on test days.  The results are really paying off--from the results we've seen so far, our students are doing well.

I will be gone Friday afternoon--family graduation in Oregon--so there will be a substitute in my place.  Things should go smoothly as I have left detailed lesson plans.

If you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.  The best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us and the phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644.

Have a wonderful week,
Michele Humble
