6th Grade Science Plans for January 30th through February 3rd, 2017

Greetings!

Hope you had a wonderful weekend.  Here is what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY--Students will watch a video about storms and fill out an accompanying worksheet in class.  It will also be corrected and turned in by the end of the period, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, & THURSDAY--Students will work in groups to research different kinds of weather topics. So NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will be begin working on the accompanying slide show on their assigned topics, so NO HOMEWORK.

You will shortly be receiving your student's "Third Term" grades; this means what he/she has earned through the first half of the second trimester.  If the marks are not up to the expectations  you may have for your child, perhaps it's time for a serious talk with him/her.  I have observed that the main reason for low grades are missing assignments, so you may want to start there.  If low test scores seem to be the problem, most of your student's teachers will allow him/her to retake a test, so you might want to explore that possibility.  Finally, I've noticed students who have missed school days don't always take the initiative of making up missing work, so you might want to take a look at that aspect.  Hope some of these tips help bring up your child's grades.

Please contact me with any questions, comments, and/or concerns you may have.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

Have a wonderful week,

Academy Plans for January 16th through 20th, 2017

Greetings!

Hope you are enjoying the long week-end.  Sounds like we're done with the cold weather for a while and our warmer, wet weather will return next week--we'll see.  Now on to this week's plans:

MONDAY--Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday--NO SCHOOL

I will be out of the classroom on Thursday, January 19th for Science curriculum work, so students will have a substitute instructor.  I have built in a "Catch Up Day" for any missing or incomplete assignments.  Please look carefully at your student's progress report and  help your student make a plan to prioritize their work.  This could greatly help your child's grade in Academy.

THURSDAY--Students will have a "Catch Up Day" and will complete any of the notes from the Seasons Slide Show notes that should be in their Science Notebooks.  Those notes are DUE FRIDAY.

FRIDAY--Students will take a QUIZ ON SEASONS, so NO HOMEWORK.  Also, this is the LAST DAY to RETAKE THE GRAPHING QUIZ.

Last week students worked on the concept of hours or daylight and latitude through graphs. (Students needed more time on graphing than I had originally thought, so I needed to adjust the activities and time last week.  I hope that did not inconvenience you.) Friday I thought the students could complete the final project in one period, but it seems most were only able to complete the online research component.  The second part was graphing the data using a website called "Create A Graph".  Many of the students wanted to complete this work over the weekend.  PLEASE ASK YOUR STUDENT ABOUT THIS.  If your child is going to complete the work at home this weekend, the only "tricky" part is sharing it with me.  He/she should NOT email it to me.  Instead, they are to save it in their Science folder in the Google Drive.  I have attached directions on one way to do this in the "Message Center" on Skyward.  Please direct your student there if he/she is having problems.  I'm holding off grading this work until Tuesday night.  I hope this helps.

This could greatly help your child's grade in Science.
