6th Grade Science Plans for Oct. 30th through Nov. 3rd, 2017

Greetings!

Well, I'm making some headway in getting caught up with the grading!  Please be patient with me--I will get there.  Now here is what we are doing this week:

MONDAY, TUESDAY, & WEDNESDAY--Students will work on their "Plant ID Slide Show".  Although they will have three full days in class to work on this, it should be considered HOMEWORK DUE THURSDAY.

THURSDAY--Students will work with equipment to construct electrical circuits in a lab setting, so NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will watch a video and will fill out an accompanying worksheet.  This will be corrected in class and will be TURNED IN AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, so NO HOMEWORK.

Notice that this Wednesday is NOT a "Late Start Day" (ACT).  I think that is because all of next week will be early release days due to conferences (Monday through Thursday, November 6th through 9th).  Also, there will be no school that Friday (November 10th) due to the Veteran's Day holiday.

I will be gone this Friday (November 3rd) and Monday (November 6th).  However, I will be back in time for the evening conferences on Tuesday, November 7th.  Although other teachers will not be in the building after release time (11:40 a.m.) on Thursday, I will be available if you would like to conference then.

As always, if you have anything you would like to discuss, please contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is:

7th Grade Science Plans for Oct. 30th through Nov. 3rd, 2017

Greetings!

Well, I'm making some headway in getting caught up with the grading!  Please be patient with me--I will get there.  Now here is what we are doing this week:

MONDAY--Students will complete calculations from last week's "Investigation 2.1 Part B", so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--We will go over the "Procedure Writing Quiz", then students will answer questions from the text in their Science Notebooks, so NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--Lab groups will write the procedure for Investigation 2.2, so NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Lab groups will carry out the experiment they wrote the procedure for yesterday, so NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will be introduced to the "Speed Triangle" and will work on an accompanying worksheet.  This is HOMEWORK DUE TUESDAY.

As you can see from your student's grade on the "Procedure Writing Quiz", he/she may have bombed it.  I was both surprised and disappointed in the responses I received.  I will try to devise a "Retest", so students who want to may retake this test.

As always, if you have anything you would like to discuss, please contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is:

7th Grade Science Plans for October 23rd through 27th, 2017

Greetings!

Well, we all managed to survive Outdoor School!  But it sure feels great to be back in "civilization", so here is what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY--Students will write reflections in their Science Notebooks about the labs we did in Chapter/Lesson #1.  These will be done in class, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--Students will read the introductory pages for Chapter/Lesson #2.  NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--Students will do "Investigation 2.1 Part A" (this is a lab), so NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will do "Investigation 2.1 Part B" (the rest of the lab), so NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will read the "Forces & Motion" selection in their textbooks and answer the questions on page 20 #2 (a-e) in their Science Notebook. These should be completed in class, so NO HOMEWORK.

I know you are seeing "NO HOMEWORK" a lot up above, however, I am planning on GRADING SCIENCE NOTEBOOKS OVER THE WEEKEND.  These will be worth 100 points, so please make sure your student has stayed caught up with his/her entries.

I hope to get several other assignments entered into Skyward this week, and as we get closer to the end of this first quarter, if I notice that your student is receiving a failing grade due to missing assignments, I will be contacting you to see if "Saturday School" is a possibility.  Thank you for your support on this.

Just a reminder: If you would like to schedule a conference, please contact the TMS Office at 360-264-3600.  The evening conferences fill up quickly, so call quickly if you need one of those.

Please contact me if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns.  The phone number in my classroom is 360-264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

6th Grade Science Plans for October 23rd through 27th, 2017

Greetings!

Well, we all managed to survive Outdoor School!  Hopefully your sixth grader had a terrific time; I know I sure did!  I'll bet your student spent a great deal of time sleeping over the weekend--we were plenty busy up there.  But now it's back to "civilization", so here is what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY--Each student will receive his/her "Outdoor School Student Handbook" and will begin recording their reflections.  These will be DUE THURSDAY.

TUESDAY--Students will take the "Outdoor School Plant Identification Post Test".  This will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.  They will have the rest of the time to work on their "ODS Student Handbooks", which will be DUE THURSDAY.

WEDNESDAY--Students will begin working on their "Plant Identification Research Worksheets".  These will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD ON FRIDAY.

THURSDAY--Students who wish to RETAKE THE ELECTRICITY QUIZ will be allowed to do so.  Afterward, students will fill out the "Outdoor School Evaluation Form".  This will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.

FRIDAY--Students will have more time to work on their "Plant Identification Research Worksheets".  These will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.  NO HOMEWORK OVER THE WEEKEND.

As you can see above, your student will have the opportunity to RETAKE THE ELECTRICITY QUIZ on Thursday, October 26th.  Please look this progress report over and find your child's score on the quiz.  If either you or your sixth grader is not satisfied with the grade, please encourage him/her to UPDATE & STUDY THEIR NOTES prior to retaking the quiz.  I emailed the slide show to your student prior to the quiz, so he/she should still have it.  It would be very helpful if you could look over the notes your student has recorded in his/her Science Notebook.  Remember:  your sixth grader CAN USE THESE NOTES ON THE QUIZ.

6th Grade Science Plans for October 16th through 20th, 2017

Greetings!

Well, big day on Tuesday!  Hope you’re all packed for Cispus.  Mrs. Schall, some of the high school counselors, and myself went up there today (Sunday), and it looks great.  Even though the weather forecast for this week isn’t the greatest, I’m sure we are all looking forward to making some “moist memories”.  Here are the plans for the week:

MONDAY—Students will take a “Plant Identification PreTest”.  This will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY—Leave for Cispus!

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY—Have fun at Cispus!

FRIDAY—Return from Cispus!

Hopefully you have made plans to take your student to school on Tuesday morning.  It is very difficult to handle luggage, a sleeping bag, etc. on a school bus.  And, if at all possible, please arrange to have your student picked up on Friday.  We should get back around 2:30 p.m.  Besides handling all that gear, your student will be extremely tired, and not up to facing a school bus ride home.  Thank you!

Last week your student took notes in his/her Science Notebook from the “Electricity Slide Show” I electronically sent him/her.  It appeared the students were doing a great job, so I gave a quiz on the material on Thursday.  Students were ALLOWED TO USE THEIR NOTES on the quiz.  I was very surprised at how poorly the students did.  This week will be crazy, but NEXT WEEK after we return from Cispus, I will allow students to RETAKE THE TEST.  This will probably be Tuesday, October 24th or Wednesday, October 25th).  Please have your student bring home his/her Science Notebook for you to look over.  You can compare what your student has written with the slide presentation; I also attached it to the “Message Center”.  Thank you for your support on this matter.

Even though it won’t impact us up at Cispus, just a reminder that Wednesday, October 18th is a LATE START DAY.  If you have any other students enrolled in the Tenino School District, hopefully you have planned accordingly.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

7th Grade Science Plans for October 16th through 20th, 2017

Greetings!

Well, this will be a big week for me--as of Tuesday, I'm off to Cispus with this year's sixth graders.(Remember last year?)  Either Mrs. Haupert (6th period) or Mr. Bowerly (7th period) will be covering my seventh grade Science classes.  Here is what I have planned for them:

MONDAY & TUESDAY--Students will continue working on the "Lesson #1 Labs".  The worksheet will be DUE THURSDAY AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.

WEDNESDAY--LATE START DAY--Students will watch a video on "Energy" and will fill out a worksheet that goes along with it, so NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Last day to complete the "Lesson #1 Labs".  Worksheets will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.  NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will take a quiz on "Procedure Writing".  It will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.  NO HOMEWORK.

Even though it won't affect me up at Cispus, just a reminder that Wednesday is a LATE START DAY for you.  Hopefully, you have planned accordingly.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

6th Grade Science Plans for October 2nd through 6th, 2017

Greetings!

I have a pile of Sixth Grade Science work I need to correct and enter in this grade book, but I felt it was more important to get my little weekly "newsletter" out to you.  I may send another progress report later this week with grades only one it.  So now on to what we are doing this week:

MONDAY--Students watched a video on atoms and did a worksheet that went along with it, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--Atom Video Worksheet was corrected in class & turned in.  Students also received their Outdoor School Student Handbooks, hence, NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--LATE START--Students will start taking notes on the Student Handbook.  These notes will be DUE FRIDAY, but there will be more time to work on them in class.

THURSDAY--Last day to work on ODS (OutDoor School) Student Handbook notes IN CLASS.  Any notes that are not completed in class are HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY.

FRIDAY--Review notes in class & turn them in.  NO HOMEWORK.

I'm sure you are already aware that Wednesday is a Late Start Day, and have planned accordingly, but just in case.......

A great big Cispus "thank you" to Christi & Rich Dallaire (David's parents), Nicole Scibelli (Sophia's mom), Jessica Palmer (Jordan's mom), and Amy Hussey (Sophia's mom) for coming in and laboring long and hard on the Student Handbooks for Outdoor School.  They managed to finish them in one day plus one hour!  And they look terrific!  Now I beg for your patience--they WILL be coming home (probably early next week), but I want to go over them in class, as you can see from the above plans.  I will attach the Student Handbook to the "Message Center", so you can view it there if you need a "sneak peak".  I AM sending the "What to Bring to Outdoor School" page with them, so you can get a head start on packing.  More to come shortly.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us
