Art Plans for December 1st through 5th, 2014

Greetings!

Sorry I'm a day late, but better late than never, right?  Hope you all enjoyed a wonderful "Turkey Day" four day weekend; I know I did.  Now here's what's coming up for this week:

MONDAY--Students will file all of the pencil sketches they have done, then will experiment with charcoal (our next medium).  There should be no homework.

TUESDAY--Students will use the charcoal to complete a cup drawing.  This will be due at the end of the period, so there will be no homework.

WEDNESDAY--Students will make charcoal drawings of Christmas ornaments.  This will be due at the end of the period.  Thus there will be no homework.

THURSDAY--Students will use charcoal to make drawings of overlapping Christmas decorations.  As usual, these will be due at the end of the period, so no homework.

FRIDAY--Students will make charcoal sketches of overlapping leaves, which will be due at the end of the period.  These will be completed in class, so should be no homework.

The only other special announcement I can think of is that I will be gone on Friday, and there will be a substitute teacher in my place.  The students have had her before, so things should go smoothly.  As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact me (email address:  humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us or classroom phone number 360-264-3644).

Hope you enjoy this chilly week,

FRIDAY--Students will take Mid-Summative Exam/Quiz #2.  This will be completed in class, so should be no homework.

I am probably overly optimistic about the amount of labs we will complete this week.  If we get behind, the above schedule could change.  There would still be no homework, however STUDENTS SHOULD STUDY THEIR "MICROSCOPE CARE & PARTS OF A MICROSCOPE SHEET FOR THE QUIZ ON FRIDAY.

Art Plans for November 24th through 28th, 2014

Greetings!

Sorry I'm a day late--being gone two days last week was certainly not in my plans!  I'm still digging out, grade-wise, but should catch up by the end of the "Turkey Day" weekend.  So here's what to expect for this very short week:

MONDAY--Students will work on pencil drawings showing overlapping with a fruit still life.  Due at the end of the period; no homework.

TUESDAY--Students will work on a pencil sketch of an item they bring from home.  This will be due at the end of the period.  No homework.

WEDNESDAY--LATE START--Students will begin to make their mask of paper mache'.  This will be done in class, so there will be no homework from me over the long weekend.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY--NO SCHOOL

I'm very concerned with how the grades of some my Art students are dropping.  Some of them don't seem to be taking the class too seriously. (Maybe I started off too easy?)  Please look very closely at your student's grade and if he/she has any missing assignments, and discuss this with him/her.  I hate to see a poor habit begin, especially in such talented students.

Enjoy the long weekend, and as always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have (email address:  humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us or classroom phone number:  (360) 264-3644).

Please forgive me for being so behind; I apologize profusely and will try not to let this happen again.  Not that it's an acceptable excuse, but planning for Outdoor School is really time consuming--but well worth it.  I think the students had a wonderful time, at least I hope so.  Even though the weather didn't exactly cooperate, the classes were terrific, the high school counselors were wonderful, and Talent Night was super!

Now on to a couple of announcements:

Because this is the last week of the first quarter, all extra credit, missing assignments, and/or late work needs to be turned in by Friday.  I plan on grading up a storm this weekend, so work MUST be turned in by then.

You are probably aware that ALL OF NEXT WEEK IS EARLY RELEASE; hopefully you have planned accordingly.

If you would still like a conference and have not been contacted so far, please call the Office (360-264-3600) and ask to schedule one.  We try to have all of the teachers there that you request; you may need to talk with only one, or possibly all of us--we try hard to make that happen.

As for the rest of this week, students worked on research on an element they selected today (Wednesday) and will begin making a model of it for the next several days--so no homework.

I hope to see many of you next week at conferences, and if not, enjoy the "short" week.  As always, feel free to contact me (Classroom phone # 360-264-3644 or email address humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

Have a wonderful week,

As for the rest of this week, students will print out their "Lit Logs" tomorrow (Thursday) and I will grade these as part of your student's Academy class.  Also, we will begin working on the personal narrative based on an Outdoor School experience, so your child will brainstorm this tomorrow.  That brainstorming paper will be due on Friday.

6th Grade Academy & Science Classes for the Week of October 6th through 10th, 2014

Greetings!

I'm combining my Academy & 6th Grade Science classes' progress reports this week because I'm a bit slammed for time--Sorry about that.  If your student only has me for one of these classes, please ignore the other.

First of all, some announcements:

Please TURN IN OUTDOOR SCHOOL FORMS ASAP--I need to send in those orders for the T-Shirts on Wednesday, and Nurse Rachel needs time to go through those medical forms.  Even if you haven't paid yet, those forms are vital, so please hurry them on in.

LATE START this Wednesday--hopefully that didn't catch you unaware.

Now on to this week's plans!

ACADEMY--Sorry about last week's personal narrative project.  It didn't happen because of computer difficulties.  Got YOU out of homework this weekend when we had such beautiful weather!  I will reschedule this project.

MONDAY--Students will be making entries in their Lit Logs (computers willing), so no homework.

TUESDAY--Students will be making posters (spelling counts!), so there IS HOMEWORK.  These will be due Thursday.

WEDNESDAY--LATE START.  No homework.

THURSDAY--Besides Lit Log entries, I want to demo student use of Skyward to check their grades, hence no homework.

FRIDAY--No homework.  We will demo the personal narrative.

Now on to SCIENCE:

MONDAY--We will read Chapter 1 in class and will discuss it.  No homework.

TUESDAY--We will begin the written assignment in class, so no homework.

WEDNESDAY--We will continue working on the Chapter 1 Section 1 assignment, however it will be due on Thursday, so HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Outdoor School Student Handbooks in class, hence no homework.

FRIDAY--Will probably need a second day to go over the ODS Student Handbooks in class.  Regardless, there will be no homework.

Have a wonderful week, and please get those Outdoor School forms in ASAP.  As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.  (Phone--(360) 264-3644, Email--humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us)

Seventh Grade Science September 29th through October 3rd, 2014

Greetings!

Sorry I didn't get back to you last week with more specifics--two volleyball games to coach and training Outdoor School counselors got the best of me.  I will try to do better in the future.

Now here's what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY:  Groups will continue the work they started on Friday--a poster on one part of the Scientific Method.  This will be due tomorrow (Tuesday).  Should only be homework if it isn't completed in class.

TUESDAY:  Students will be doing a presentation on their posters; listeners will be taking notes on the presentations, so no homework.

WEDNESDAY:  Students will watch a video on pseudoscience and will take notes on it in class.  This will be due at the end of the period.  No homework.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY:  Students will progress to written conclusions for lab reports.  No homework.

As always, if you would like to contact me, please call the number in my classroom (360-264-3644) or email me at humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

Now here's what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY:  We will cover changing the value of tempera paint using black & white paint.  Students will practice using this medium.  No homework.

TUESDAY:  We will continue exploring tempera values, so no homework.

WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, & FRIDAY:  Students will select one hue and will use it in a monochromatic color scheme.  No homework.

Sixth Grade Science for the Week of September 29th through October 3rd, 2014

Greetings!

Sorry I didn't get back to you last week with more specifics--two volleyball games to coach and training Outdoor School counselors got the best of me.  I will try to do better in the future.

Speaking of Outdoor School, THE PARENT MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH AT 7:00 P.M. IN THE TMS COMMONS.  Hope you can make it.

Now here's what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY & TUESDAY:  We are working on our first lab report together in class, so no homework.

WEDNESDAY:  I will be giving a presentation to the students on Outdoor School, so no homework.

THURSDAY:  Students will be writing a conclusion to the lab report on their own.  HOMEWORK:  This will be due on Friday.

FRIDAY:  Since our lab experience is based on the "Mentos & Diet Coke" phenomena, students will be watching the "Mythbusters" version of it.  Needless to say, no homework.

I was a bit  disappointed at how few students turned in the Agenda Assignment.  I have tried to explain to the students how even an "F" grade will give them some points, while a missing assignment gives them none.  Please look over your student's progress report carefully, and if there are ANY MISSING ASSIGNMENTS, help your student get them turned in.

As always, if you would like to contact me, please call the number in my classroom (360-264-3644) or email me at humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

See you Tuesday at 7:00, I hope,

Now here's what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY:  After silent reading & Lit Log entries, we will use Roberts' Rules of Order to elect our class officers, so no homework.

TUESDAY:  After we go over the answers in class, students will get back the "Agenda Assignment".  No homework.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY:  We will discuss personal narratives in class.  Students will start writing theirs; these will be due Friday (October 4th), so homework.

FRIDAY:  Students will peer edit their narratives.  I am also asking YOU to edit them over the weekend, so I guess you could say that YOU will have homework over the weekend.

Art & 7th Grade Science Progress Reports 9-22-2014

Greetings!

Hope you had a wonderful week, and the upcoming one will be great, too.  As I was gone on Friday, I will not be able to give you a detailed plan for this week until I get into my classroom early tomorrow morning and see what the substitute was able to accomplish.  Stay tuned!  I can, however, email you these progress reports.  Please check them over carefully, and if your student is missing any assignments, please discuss this with him or her.  Missing work is the #1 reason as student’s grade goes down.

The year is starting out so strongly; I really feel good about it.  And I have been in this profession long enough to know that it doesn’t just “happen”—thank your for all of your support, concern, and communications.  Let’s continue to make this a great transitional year for you and your student.  As always, please feel free to contact me at this email address:  humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us or through the phone at:  (360) 264-3644.

Thanks again,

Michele Humble

We are just a little over four weeks away from Outdoor School, so I really want to get the ball rolling. I AM TENTATIVELY planning the PARENT MEETING FOR TUESDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 30TH, @ 7:00 P.M. IN THE TENINO MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMONS.  Please make every effort to be there.  I will cover the program, the volunteer positions (both at Cispus and here at home), costs (tuition this year is $75 per student), and be available to answer your questions.  Also, Nurse Rachel Peters will be present to go over the medical protocols and you will be able to make your payment that same night.  I will confirm this time, date, & location with you later this week when I send the other email out.
