6th Grade Science Plans for February 27th through March 3rd, 2017

Greetings!

Trimester #2 is winding down, so please be very aware of your student's grades.  As I mentioned earlier, I will NO LONGER BE ACCEPTING WORK FROM TERM #3.  That ENDED JANUARY 30TH, so any assignments that were due before that date will no longer be accepted.

Now, on to this week's plans:

MONDAY--Students begin work on Microscope Lesson #1 which is HOMEWORK DUE TUESDAY.

TUESDAY--Students will receive and go over Microscope Lesson #2 in class.  There is NO HOMEWORK, however they should STUDY FOR THE TEST.

WEDNESDAY--Students will TAKE MICROSCOPE TEST #1, so NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY--Students will work on Microscope Lesson #3.  They will take a "Practical Lab Test" in class and will work on either a poster, rap, or short story.  The latter is HOMEWORK DUE MONDAY.

Looks like this might actually be a "normal" week (for whatever that might mean in middle school), so please contact me if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns.  The best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us and the phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644.

Have a wonderful week,

6th Period Science Plans for February 20th through 24th, 2017

Greetings!

Well, we should all feel well rested after a four day weekend, right?  Hopefully everyone will come back with their batteries fully charged and ready to go and tackle the second of half of this trimester.  So here are this week's plans:

MONDAY--Presidents' Day--NO SCHOOL

TUESDAY--Students will be do a self then group evaluation on the "Weather Topics Slide Show".  This will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.  Students will have the remainder of the period to STUDY FOR WEDNESDAY'S TEST.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY--LATE START DAY--Students will take the "Weather Topics Slide Show" TEST so NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will watch a video on microscopes (our next unit) and will take notes on it.  They will TURN THE NOTES IN AT THE END OF THE PERIOD.  So, NO HOMEWORK.

I'm sure you've noticed from the plans above, that I pushed the "Weather Topics TEST" back a day.  I didn't feel good about giving it the day after the four day weekend, and wanted to give them some additional time to study.  Hope this helps!

I'm sure you noticed above that Wednesday is a LATE START DAY, so hopefully you have planned accordingly.

I am alarmed at the number of missing assignments students seem to have right now.  If your student's grade seems to have plunged, please look to see if there are any missing assignments.
Please help your student get any missing work turned in ASAP.  When work isn't turned in on time, it makes it very difficult for me to make time to get it graded and entered into the grade book (I budget my time very precisely for important tasks like this).  As we all know, being responsible & meeting deadlines is a very important life skill, and can often lead to losing a job and/or missing an opportunity for career advancement.  The sooner our middle school students realize the importance of this, the greater the impact will be (especially on their grades).  Thank you for your support on this.

I will be gone Thursday afternoon and all day Friday, so if you could discuss appropriate behavior with a substitute teacher with your student, that would be greatly appreciated--both by me as well as the"guest teacher".  Thanks!

Please contact me with any questions, comments, and/or concerns you may have.  The best phone number to reach me at is the one in my classroom (360-264-3644) and email address is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

MONDAY--Presidents' Day--NO SCHOOL

TUESDAY--Students will receive the work they have turned in so far on the Biography Project.  I will also demonstrate writing a persuasive essay based on facts that have been read.  NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--LATE START DAY--Students will begin to write their own persuasive paragraphs (there will be three in total, one for each character trait).  All three will be DUE TUESDAY.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY--Students will continue to write their three paragraphs.  This is HOMEWORK that is DUE TUESDAY.

I'm sure you noticed above that Wednesday is a LATE START DAY, so hopefully you have planned accordingly.

I am alarmed at the number of missing assignments students seem to have right now.  If your student's grade seems to have plunged, please look to see if there are any missing assignments.  This is especially important on the project we are working on now (Biography).

6th Grade Science Plans for February 13th through 17th, 2017

Greetings!

I am sorry this is late--between three days up in Seattle at a coaches' clinic, and TWO Knowledge Bowl meets this week, I've been slammed.  I know, I know, I wouldn't accept excuses from my students, so why should I be allowed to give them?  (Just a fair warning:  the Volleyball season starts up next week, so things won't get much better from me.)  So on to our plans for this week:

MONDAY--Students will rehearse for their "Weather Topic Slide Show".  This is HOMEWORK DUE TUESDAY.

TUESDAY--Students will present their slide shows, so NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--Students will complete their presentations, fill out evaluations, and should STUDY FOR THE TEST ON THURSDAY*.  Consider this HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will TAKE THE TEST on the "Weather Topic Slide Shows" they saw this week.  These will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, so NO HOMEWORK.

*Each student will have access to ALL OF THE SLIDE SHOWS TO STUDY electronically.  Each student should receive these via email.

FRIDAY--NO SCHOOL

Just in case you were not informed electronically, our two make up days for last week's "Snow Days" will be TACKED ONTO THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.  This means instead of getting out of school on Friday, June 16th, we will be done on Tuesday, June20th.  Be sure to add that to your calendar.

I am assuming you are award that there is NO SCHOOL THIS FRIDAY NOR THE FOLLOWING MONDAY (February 17th-20th, Mid-Winter Break), so please plan accordingly.

As for the volleyball season (See my excuse above), I very carefully budget my time for grading assignments.  I know that students do not choose to become sick, so when their work is turned in late, it's not really their fault.  However, MOST of the assignments that are turned in late is just because students are disorganized, forget it, left it in their lockers, etc.  This has gotten to epic proportions--Not a good thing.  I am on the verge of NO LONGER ACCEPTING LATE WORK.  With the upcoming volleyball season, I will have far less time to go back and grade late assignments and put them into Skyward.  PLEASE DISCUSS THIS WITH YOUR STUDENT.  Being responsible and meeting deadlines is a life skill we all deal with.  I really appreciate your support on this matter.

Please contact me with any questions, comments, and/or concerns you may have.  The best email address is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us and the phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644.

Academy Plans for February 6th through 10th, 2017

Greetings and BRRRRRR!!!

We finally got our snow, followed by icy roads, and judging by the number of emails I've received from bored students today, I'd say we're all ready to head back to the classroom.  So here are the plans for this week (assuming we don't miss anymore days this week):

WEDNESDAY--Students will complete the the "rough draft" of the opening page of their Biography Project.  This is HOMEWORK DUE THURSDAY.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY--Students will work on the covers for their Biography project.  This will be DUE TUESDAY, so technically NO HOMEWORK.

FYI, I will be out of the classroom on Friday (coaching clinic in Seattle), so please discuss appropriate behavior with a substitute teacher in the classroom in my absence.

I'm sure you are aware that Wednesday, February 8th is a LATE START DAY, and hopefully you have planned accordingly.

You should have received your student's grades for the first half of Trimester 2 (they are labeled as "Term 3").  If you and your student are not satisfied with them, perhaps a discussion of what to do to improve those grades is in order.  The #1 reason for low grades is missing assignments, so that might be a good place to start the discussion, and reviewing this progress report would help, too.

Please contact me with any questions, comments and/or concerns.  The best email address is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us and the phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644.

Have a wonderful week,
