Seventh Grade Science September 29th through October 3rd, 2014

Greetings!

Sorry I didn't get back to you last week with more specifics--two volleyball games to coach and training Outdoor School counselors got the best of me.  I will try to do better in the future.

Now here's what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY:  Groups will continue the work they started on Friday--a poster on one part of the Scientific Method.  This will be due tomorrow (Tuesday).  Should only be homework if it isn't completed in class.

TUESDAY:  Students will be doing a presentation on their posters; listeners will be taking notes on the presentations, so no homework.

WEDNESDAY:  Students will watch a video on pseudoscience and will take notes on it in class.  This will be due at the end of the period.  No homework.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY:  Students will progress to written conclusions for lab reports.  No homework.

As always, if you would like to contact me, please call the number in my classroom (360-264-3644) or email me at humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

Have a wonderful week,
Michele Humble

TUESDAY:  We will continue exploring tempera values, so no homework.

WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY, & FRIDAY:  Students will select one hue and will use it in a monochromatic color scheme.  No homework.

Sixth Grade Science for the Week of September 29th through October 3rd, 2014

Greetings!

Sorry I didn't get back to you last week with more specifics--two volleyball games to coach and training Outdoor School counselors got the best of me.  I will try to do better in the future.

Speaking of Outdoor School, THE PARENT MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE ON TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH AT 7:00 P.M. IN THE TMS COMMONS.  Hope you can make it.

Now here's what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY & TUESDAY:  We are working on our first lab report together in class, so no homework.

WEDNESDAY:  I will be giving a presentation to the students on Outdoor School, so no homework.

THURSDAY:  Students will be writing a conclusion to the lab report on their own.  HOMEWORK:  This will be due on Friday.

FRIDAY:  Since our lab experience is based on the "Mentos & Diet Coke" phenomena, students will be watching the "Mythbusters" version of it.  Needless to say, no homework.

I was a bit  disappointed at how few students turned in the Agenda Assignment.  I have tried to explain to the students how even an "F" grade will give them some points, while a missing assignment gives them none.  Please look over your student's progress report carefully, and if there are ANY MISSING ASSIGNMENTS, help your student get them turned in.

As always, if you would like to contact me, please call the number in my classroom (360-264-3644) or email me at humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

See you Tuesday at 7:00, I hope,
Michele Humble

Now here's what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY:  After silent reading & Lit Log entries, we will use Roberts' Rules of Order to elect our class officers, so no homework.

TUESDAY:  After we go over the answers in class, students will get back the "Agenda Assignment".  No homework.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY:  We will discuss personal narratives in class.  Students will start writing theirs; these will be due Friday (October 4th), so homework.

FRIDAY:  Students will peer edit their narratives.  I am also asking YOU to edit them over the weekend, so I guess you could say that YOU will have homework over the weekend.

Art & 7th Grade Science Progress Reports 9-22-2014

Greetings!

Hope you had a wonderful week, and the upcoming one will be great, too.  As I was gone on Friday, I will not be able to give you a detailed plan for this week until I get into my classroom early tomorrow morning and see what the substitute was able to accomplish.  Stay tuned!  I can, however, email you these progress reports.  Please check them over carefully, and if your student is missing any assignments, please discuss this with him or her.  Missing work is the #1 reason as student’s grade goes down.

The year is starting out so strongly; I really feel good about it.  And I have been in this profession long enough to know that it doesn’t just “happen”—thank your for all of your support, concern, and communications.  Let’s continue to make this a great transitional year for you and your student.  As always, please feel free to contact me at this email address:  humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us or through the phone at:  (360) 264-3644.

Thanks again,

Michele Humble

We are just a little over four weeks away from Outdoor School, so I really want to get the ball rolling. I AM TENTATIVELY planning the PARENT MEETING FOR TUESDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 30TH, @ 7:00 P.M. IN THE TENINO MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMONS.  Please make every effort to be there.  I will cover the program, the volunteer positions (both at Cispus and here at home), costs (tuition this year is $75 per student), and be available to answer your questions.  Also, Nurse Rachel Peters will be present to go over the medical protocols and you will be able to make your payment that same night.  I will confirm this time, date, & location with you later this week when I send the other email out.

Art Class September 15th through 19th, 2014

Greetings!

We only have one grade to post (Art Portfolio) from the past two weeks, but this week will be a busy one.  Here is a "Sneak Preview" of the upcoming week:

MONDAY--Students will continue to practice their watercolor techniques, so no homework.

TUESDAY--Students will learn to use a ruler to construct columns and will begin to use watercolors to paint the colors of the spectrum in order.  No homework.

WEDNESDAY--Students will learn to mix intermediate colors using watercolor paints.  They will use these to complete the twelve columns on their paper.  No homework.

THURSDAY--Students will learn to use a compass to construct a circle.  This will be done in class, so no homework.

FRIDAY--Students will watch an Art video and will take notes on it.  These notes will be due at the end of the period.  No homework.

As a side note, I will be gone on Friday, but I expect the students to carry on just fine without me--they are a superior class.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  My classroom phone number is: (360) 264-3644 and my email address is:  humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us  (Please DON'T use the Skyward response; it does not work correctly.)  I look forward to hearing from you.

Have a wonderful week,

7th Grade Science for Sept. 15th through 19th, 2014

Greetings!

We have some actual grades to post from the past two weeks, as well as a "Sneak Preview" of the upcoming week, so here goes:

MONDAY--We will get back last week's quiz and we will go over it.  Next we will watch a video on the Scientific Method.  Students will then compare & contrast that information from an article on the Scientific Method.  This will be due at the end of the period, so no homework.

TUESDAY--Students will write a summary on the Scientific Method article as well as make a flowchart on it.  These will be due at the end of the period.  No homework.

WEDNESDAY--Students will receive the assessment they took on writing a conclusion for an experiment.  We will go over it, and put a "Cheat Sheet" into their Science Notebooks on it.  No homework.

THURSDAY--Students will practice writing conclusions for experiments.  This will be done in class, so no homework.

FRIDAY--Students will practice their note taking skills on a plants video.  These will be due at the end of the period.  No homework.

6th Grade Science Sept. 15th through 19th, 2014

Greetings!

We have some actual grades to post from the past two weeks, as well as a "Sneak Preview" of the upcoming week, so here goes:

MONDAY--We will get back last week's work and will go over it.  Next we will watch a video on the Scientific Method.  No homework.

TUESDAY--I will demonstrate the skills the students will need to do the "Measurement Lab".  No homework.

WEDNESDAY--Students will begin the Measurement Lab.  No homework.

THURSDAY--Students will complete the Measurement Lab and will turn in their work, so homework.

FRIDAY--Students will practice their note taking skills on a plants video.  These will be due at the end of the period.  No homework.

A couple of "odds & ends":  I will be gone on Friday, but I expect the students to carry on just fine without me--they are a superior class.  Also, if you haven't put it on your calendar yet, your student's Outdoor School experience will take place October 21st through the 24th.  I will be having a parent night meeting in about two weeks (precise date to come shortly) to fill you in on the details.  The fee is $75, and covers your child's meals, boarding, transportation, instructional materials, nurse, T-shirt to tie dye, and incidentals.  You may pay this fee now; checks should be made out to Tenino Middle School and sent to the Office.  Also, if you can afford a "little extra", many of our students will be in need of scholarships to cover this expense.  In the past our parents have been extremely generous, some even sponsoring the entire fee for a student other than their own child.  Every little bit helps.

Academy September 15th through 19th, 2014

Greetings!

We have some actual grades to post from the past two weeks, as well as a "Sneak Preview" of the upcoming week, so here goes:

MONDAY--We will be MAP testing on Math, so no homework.  However, I will be grading their agenda/planner entries from last week.

TUESDAY--Aside from reading their AR books, students will learn how to make entries in their Lit Logs.  We will also go over a sheet on the "Elements of Literature".  No homework.

WEDNESDAY--We will be MAP testing for Reading, so no homework.

THURSDAY--After reading their AR books silently (SSR), students will begin to engage in a scavenger hunt based on their planners/agendas.  No homework.

FRIDAY--After SSR, students will complete the agenda scavenger hunt.  It will be due on Monday.

Seventh Grade Science September 8-12, 2014

Greetings!

Well, we have all survived the first week of school--Hooray!  The school year is off to a great start and you have some wonderful students.  I am Michele Humble, your seventh grader's Science teacher, and you can look forward to these electronic emails weekly--I try to send them Sunday night because I do a lot of grading over the weekend, and I want them to be accurate.  I'm sure you saw in the Student Handbook how you can access ALL of your student's grades on Skyward; I hope you will take advantage of this excellent tool.

Those of you who I had your students last year know that I usually send a pretty detailed schedule of what the week will look like, but as all of the seventh grade Science curriculum is new to me too, I am also finding my way through it, so please be patient with me.  For this week, Monday we will be adding information on variables to the Science Notebook (this will be done in class), and we will be analyzing Science experiments Tuesday.  Wednesday we will review note taking, so there will be a practice assignment, but that too will be done in class.  Finally, on Thursday & Friday we will be reviewing the Scientific Method.  So as you can see, plenty of work being done in class, but NO HOMEWORK THIS WEEK.

However, as you examine your student's progress report for last week, please note there were three items your child should have turned in:  his/her Science Notebook, the course syllabus (signed by you & your student), and the lab safety sheet (again, signed by both of you).  If any of these are missing, please discuss it with your student and have him/her turn it in as soon as possible.  Let's start the year off in a responsible, organized way.

Please look for these progress reports weekly (at least that is my goal), and if you ever have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is:  (360) 264-3644 and my email address is:  humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us.  Please DO NOT try to contact me through Skyward--THE SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK, so I will not receive your emails in a timely fashion.

I hope your student is as excited about the upcoming school year as I am.  Have a great week!

Michele Humble

MONDAY--We will discuss the "Doing Science" worksheet students did in class Friday.  We will also discuss the Scientific Method, so there will be no homework.

TUESDAY--We will discuss taking good notes, then we will use these skills by taking notes on an insect video.  This will be done in class, so no homework.

WEDNESDAY--We will do an observation and a stereotype activity in class.  Although these will be graded, there will be no homework.

THURSDAY--We will discuss how collecting data is important for a scientist, then we will do a lab in class to practice collecting data.  Again, no homework.

FRIDAY--I will introduce different kinds of glassware used in labs, as well as the skills of using graduated cylinders, beakers, triple beam balance scales, thermometers, and how to waft.  Once again, no homework.
