6th Grade Science for June 17th, 2019

Greetings!

Well, it appears the school year has come to an end, and a good one it has been, too.  It has been a pleasure to work with your student this year--I have enjoyed these kids immensely.  Mrs. Harris or Mrs. Schall is in for a real treat next year when she has them as seventh graders.

Now I am NOT going to say "What you see is what you get" because I will be in my classroom tomorrow (Tuesday, June 18th) to grade those 100 point Science Notebooks, so that could swing your student's grade quite a bit up or down.  I was a bit disappointed that several assignments (Frog Dissection Worksheet,  Mint Green Science Starter, Body Systems Research Worksheet, etc.) were not turned in.  IF you want your student to come in tomorrow and work on missing work, I will be in my classroom from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  This will NOT be playtime for him/her--I have my own work to get done (above mentioned Science Notebooks and report cards to be completed).  That means the student will need to be self sufficient--finding missing work and getting it done.  Also, transportation will need to be arranged.  I just thought I would make one last offer in case you would like to boost your student's grade and/or perhaps send a message that one needs to take his/her grades seriously.  I believe grades must be posted by noon on Wednesday, June 19th, and I will be in my classroom that morning as well.  If you would like to contact me prior to bringing your student in, the number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644.

Thank you again for a wonderful year,
Michele M. Humble

7th Grade Science for June 17th, 2019

Greetings!

Well, it appears the school year has come to an end, and a good one it has been, too.  It has been a pleasure to work with your student this year--I have enjoyed these kids even more this year than last.  Mrs. Harris is in for a real treat next year when she has them as eighth graders.

Now I am NOT going to say "What you see is what you get" because I will be in my classroom tomorrow (Tuesday, June 18th) to grade those 100 point Science Notebooks, so that could swing your student's grade quite a bit up or down.  I was a bit disappointed that several assignments (Animal Research WS, Mint Green Science Starter, Inv. 6.1 Worksheet, etc.) were not turned in.

6th Grade Science Plans for June 3rd - 7th, 2019

Greetings!

Boy, it's exciting around here!  So this is what is planned for this week:

MONDAY & TUESDAY--Students will work in groups on creating their "Body Systems Slide Shows"; this is HOMEWORK DUE WEDNESDAY.

WEDNESDAY--Students will present their slide shows.  NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will cover information on their upcoming frog dissections.  NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will begin their frog dissections, so NO HOMEWORK.

As I told the students today when I handed out a printed progress report:  WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12TH IS THE LAST DAY FOR LATE WORK AND MISSING ASSIGNMENTS.  The grade in this Science class can still change--we have 100 points coming up on all SCIENCE NOTEBOOKS, plus 105 points on their "Body System Slide Show" & presentation, another 100 points for their frog dissection & its accompanying worksheets, and more, so there's a definite possibility a student's grade could move up or down.  So please encourage your student to working to the end--this could make a big difference.

Next Tuesday, June 11th (8th graders), and Wednesday, June 12th, (7th graders) will be going to the refuge near the Tenino City Park for a water testing activity.   Although you may not have a 7th or 8th grader, we are still looking for some parent helpers, so if you already have your volunteer paperwork turned in, and could accompany us either day (June 11th with the 8th graders, June 12th with the 7th graders), it would be greatly appreciated.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.  The number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

MONDAY--Students will watch a video on the Nitrogen and Carbon Cycles.  There is an accompanying worksheet; this is HOMEWORK DUE WEDNESDAY.

TUESDAY--Students will complete the Nitrogen & Carbon Cycles worksheet and will add Nitrogen & Carbon Cycle diagrams to their Science Notebooks.  This is HOMEWORK DUE WEDNESDAY.

WEDNESDAY--Students will take notes in their Science Notebooks.  NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will cover information in the textbook and will begin a lab.  NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will take measurements on the classroom "ponds", so NO HOMEWORK.

As I told the students today when I handed out a printed progress report:  WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12TH IS THE LAST DAY FOR LATE WORK AND MISSING ASSIGNMENTS.  The grade in this Science class can still change--we have 100 points coming up on all SCIENCE NOTEBOOKS, plus the "Animal Research Poster" & accompanying paperwork, another lab and the lab day, and more, so there's a definite possibility a student's grade could move up or down.  So please encourage your student to working to the end--this could make a big difference.

Next WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12th, our 7th graders will be going to the refuge near the Tenino City Park for a water testing activity.  PERMISSION SLIPS WILL BE GOING HOME WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5TH.  Please be sure to fill it out and return it by FRIDAY, JUNE 7th.  Also, we are still looking for some volunteers, so if you already have your volunteer paperwork turned in, and could accompany us that day (or even June 11th with the 8th graders), it would be greatly appreciated.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.  The number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

6th Grade Science Plans for May 13th through 17th, 2019

Greetings!

Well, the big test week is here!  Gives us a chance to show what we know.  Please be sure your student is well rested and fed for the big assessments.  Tuesday, May 14th, we will assess English/Language Arts on the CAT format, then on Thursday, May 16th, students will take the SBA in English/Language Arts in the PT format.  Both days we will be testing from first through fourth periods (approximately 8:30 a.m. to noon).  Because I do not want to add any additional stress to your student, there will be NO HOMEWORK this week.  Also, feel free to send bottled water and snacks with your students on these test days--we will be taking little breaks to maintain focus.

Now here's what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY--Students who did not complete the "Parts of the Cell Test" last week will be given an opportunity to finish this while the rest of us review what we learned last week, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--3rd & 4th period classes will not meet due to the SBA Testing, so again, NO HOMEWORK.
TUESDAY--5th, 6th, & 7th period classes will begin working on their "Cell City" project.  NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--Students will work on their "Cell City" projects.  NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--3rd & 4th period classes will continue to work on their "Cell City" projects.  NO HOMEWORK.
THURSDAY--5th, 6th, & 7th period classes will not meet due to the SBA Testing schedule, so NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will begin to work on teams for their "Plant" or "Animal Cell Model".  NO HOMEWORK.

Please contact me with any questions, comments, and/or concerns you may have.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

6th Grade Science Plans for May 6-10, 2019

Greetings!

Hope you are enjoying this lovely weather and are looking forward to Mother's Day this weekend.  Now here is what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY & TUESDAY--Students will work on the "Simply Cells" video worksheet.  This is HOMEWORK DUE WEDNESDAY.

WEDNESDAY--Students will REVIEW FOR WEDNESDAY'S TEST.  The test will cover a diagram to identify the different parts and a written test (Matching, True/False, Multiple Choice) on the functions of the different parts of the cell as well as the three parts of the Cell Theory and Kinds of Cells.  Students should STUDY FOR THE TEST.

THURSDAY--Parts of a Cell TEST.  This will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, so there will be NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will go over the test and review the parts of the cell, so NO HOMEWORK.

As you can see, we have been covering the parts of a cell and their functions quite heavily--students have had four assignments on them so far.  Many of these assignments HAVE NOT BEEN TURNED IN.  Please look carefully at your student's missing assignments.  Missing assignments impact a student's grade far worse than an "F" grade  (at least they get "some" points for an "F").  If your student has ANY missing assignments, please hold him/her responsible for completing them and turning that work in.  Your student does not need to stay after school with me to complete any of the assignments that have the word "Cell" in them, and the same holds true for the "Microscope Word Search".  But these really do need to be completed, especially BEFORE we take the test on Thursday.

Next week we will begin our State Testing.  These will be the ELA (English/Language Arts) assessments.  They will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, May 14th and Thursday, May 16th.  Please make sure your student is well rested and has had breakfast so he/she is ready go and show his/her best on those tests.  The Math assessments will take place the following week on Tuesday, May 21st, and Thursday, May 23rd.  Thank you for your support!

As always, if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

6th Grade Science Plans for April 29th-May 1st, 2019

Greetings!

Well, I am finally all caught up with my sixth graders' assignments!  Considering we had three "finals" last week, totaling 230 points, I'm amazed I was able to do it.  Now on with this week's plans:

MONDAY--Students received the "Animal & Plant Cells Coloring Sheet".  This is HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY.

TUESDAY--Students will watch a video about cells, so NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--LATE START DAY--Students will get back several assignments and will record these on their "Assignment Log", so again NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will use their Chromebooks to research the functions of various cell parts.  This is HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY.

FRIDAY--Students will share their work from Thursday, then turn in their worksheet, so NO HOMEWORK over the weekend.

I'm sure you are aware that tomorrow (Wednesday, May 1st) is a LATE START DAY and have already planned appropriately for it.  FYI:  This is the last late start of the year.

Hopefully your student has brought in his/her pledge sheet for this week's "Fund Run".  It is one of our few fundraisers, so if you and/or those you know could donate, it would be greatly appreciated.  Please make checks payable to "Tenino Middle School".  If every student could bring in $10, we would make over $3,000, which would be amazing!  We will be doing this Friday afternoon (may 3rd).  If you have your volunteer forms up to date, I'm sure it's not too late to contact the Office to see if you can help out.  The weather forecast is beautiful, so it would be a lovely way to spend the afternoon.

If you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address for me is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

7th Grade Science Plans for April 29th-May 3rd, 2019

Greetings!

Well, I am caught up with my sixth graders' assignments, but I am NOT completely caught up on my seventh graders' work.  SIGH!!!  But I wanted to send you what I do have done.  I hope to get caught up by the end of this week, so please be patience with me.  Thank you.

Now on with this week's plans:

MONDAY--Students will work on Investigation 1.3.  The worksheet is DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--Students will complete Investigation 1.4 in class, then turn in the worksheet AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, so again NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--LATE START DAY--Students will get back several assignments and will record these on their "Assignment Log".  NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will take notes in their Science Notebooks and will learn how to carry out the water tests.  NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will carry out their water testing, so NO HOMEWORK over the weekend.

I'm sure you are aware that tomorrow (Wednesday, May 1st) is a LATE START DAY and have already planned appropriately for it.  FYI:  This is the last late start of the year.

7th Grade Science Plans for April 22-26, 2019

Greetings!

Sorry this is a bit late, but I'm at least caught up on grading all of the fourth quarter assignments that have come in, and I wanted to be accurate.  So here is what we're doing this week:

MONDAY--Students will watch a video on ecology in class, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--Students will complete the video, so again, NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--Students will take notes in their Science Notebooks.  Also, the INVESTIGATION 9.1 PROCEDURE IS HOMEWORK DUE THURSDAY.

THURSDAY--Students will set up their "Ponds" in class, so NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--Students will add the organisms to their "Ponds", so once again NO HOMEWORK.

I realize there are no new fourth quarter grades posted here, except the "Extra Credit Point", but I wanted you to know what we're doing in class this week.  Thanks for understanding.

Just a reminder that we have started out Spring Fundraiser, the "Fund Run".  Please help your student get pledges for this.  They can be a flat amount or per lap.  Any student who raises at lease $25 will receive a t-shirt.  We will be going out to the track on Friday, May 3rd in the afternoon to complete this activity.  I am sure the Office will be looking for volunteers, so if you are interested, please contact them (360-264-3600).  Thank you.

If you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please contact me.  The phone number for my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

Greetings!

Sorry this is a bit late, but I'm at least caught up on grading all of the fourth quarter assignments that have come in, and I wanted to be accurate.  So here is what we're doing this week:

MONDAY--Students will participate in the "Practical Lab Test Final".  This will be worth 50 points and will be completed in class, so NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--Students will take the written test for our Microscope Unit.  It is worth 80 points.  This will also be done in class, so again, NO HOMEWORK.

WEDNESDAY--Students will complete their "Final Microscope Drawing" in class.  This will be worth 100 points.  NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY--Students will begin the "Structure and Function" Unit by adding diagrams to their Science Notebooks.  Although students will have two days to work on this in class, if it is not completed there, it will BE HOMEWORK DUE TUESDAY.

As we finish up our Microscope Unit, students who have missed any of the labs will be asked to stay after school (until at least 4:00 p.m.) or arrive early in the morning (7:30 a.m.) to complete them.  These are lab activities and the microscopes are necessary to complete them; it is not possible for your student to take one home.  As you look over your student's progress report, and any of the Microscope lessons are missing, please make arrangements for your child to make these up before or after school.  Thank you for your support on this matter.

Third Quarter Grades

Greetings!

This is NOT my "weekly report of what we will be doing next week!  I finally finished grading all of the Science Notebooks, and wanted you to see what your student's 3rd quarter grade is.  Please remember this is what he/she earned for the FIRST HALF of the second semester.  Better progress during the SECOND HALF of this semester will result in a higher grade for the semester grade.

Sorry this is late--grading 134 Science Notebooks takes longer than one would think.

Hopefully your student, and possibly you will be able to attend the "Earth Day" clean up at the Tenino City Park tomorrow, Saturday, April 20th.  It will run from 10:00 a.m. (sign in at the Quarry House) until approximately 12:30 p.m.  We will have a tree planting ceremony followed by lunch.  All those participating will receive a t-shirt.  We are competing for a $500 first prize; the school with the most participants will win.  We get to COUNT PARENTS/GUARDIANS, too--so if you come by and help out you could help us, too!  Please consider it--this is a wonderful way to give back to our community.  And besides, the weather forecast is even in our favor!

Have a wonderful weekend,
Michele Humble

7th Grade Plans for March 25-29, 2019

Greetings!

Happy Conference Week!  Next to Outdoor School (Cispus), this is my favorite week of the year; I love listening to our students lead their own presentations on their progress here at TMS.  If you haven't signed up for an SLC (Student Led Conference), it's not too late.  Just jump onto Skyward and you should be able to do it there.

Now here is what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY--This will be a "Study Hall style day so students can catch up on missing assignments.  NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--Students will work on an assignment on the Periodic Table.  This is HOMEWORK DUE THURSDAY.

WEDNESDAY--CLASS WILL NOT MEET.

THURSDAY--No new work; this will be a "Catch Up Day" on missing assignments.  NO HOMEWORK.

FRIDAY--CLASS WILL NOT MEET.

I am VERY concerned with the number of missing assignments.  I know Spring Break is next week (April 1-5), but some of our students are going on vacation early, at least mentally.  The 3rd Quarter ends on Wednesday, April 10th when we return, so that's not much time.  PLEASE HAVE YOUR STUDENT COMPLETE MISSING WORK AND TURN IT IN ASAP.  Missing assignments do the most damage to a student's grade--Even an "F" will get you some points.

If you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please contact me.  The best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us and the phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644.

6th Grade Science Plans for March 18-22, 2019

Greetings!

Well, I am keeping my word!  This past weekend I graded everything that didn't move--and you will see the results on this progress report.  But first, here's what we are doing this week:

MONDAY & TUESDAY--Students will work on "Microscope Lesson #3" (a rap, story, or poster).  It is HOMEWORK DUE WEDNESDAY.

WEDNESDAY--LATE START DAY--Students will get back and go over previous assignments.  NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students will work on "Microscope Lesson #4".  This is HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY.

FRIDAY--Students will work on "Microscope Lesson #5".  This is a lab.  It will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, so NO HOMEWORK.

As you can see up above, Wednesday is a "Late Start Day", so hopefully you are already prepared for that.

Students are competing in a "Canned Food Drive".  This is being collected in your student's first period class.  This can be a difficult time of year for food banks, yet the need is still there.  So if you can spare some non-perishable foodstuffs for your child to contribute, it would be greatly appreciated.

Next week is "Student Led Conference Week".  If you have not already gone into Skyward to register for your conference time, please do so ASAP.  Monday will be a "regular" day (if there is such a thing in middle school), but then Tuesday through Friday will be early release days.  Tuesday is our evening conference time, so if that's the most convenient time for you to come, I want to encourage you to confirm your conference time quickly--those evening slots fill up quickly.

You may have noticed your student's grades went down, in some cases sizeably.  This is mainly due to missing assignments.  I am making myself available after school Monday through Friday until 4:00 p.m.  Also, I will be at school by 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and Friday (I have meetings scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday).  Please help your student get caught up so his/her grades truly reflect the kind of student he/she is.

Well, I am keeping my word!  This past weekend I graded everything that didn't move--and you will see the results on this progress report.  But first, here's what we are doing this week:

MONDAY & TUESDAY--Students will work on their "Atoms, Molecules, Elements, Etc. Slide Show".  Students have a rubric for this, so they know what is expected in this assignment.  It is HOMEWORK DUE WEDNESDAY.

WEDNESDAY--LATE START DAY--Students will get back and go over previous assignments.  NO HOMEWORK.

THURSDAY--Students have a textbook assignment on the Density Chapter.  This is HOMEWORK DUE FRIDAY.

FRIDAY--Students will take a quiz on Density and CER.  This will be DUE AT THE END OF THE PERIOD, so NO HOMEWORK.

6th Grade Science Plans for March 11-15, 2019

Greetings!

Sorry this is so late.  It seems like I am still digging out from the month of February--Sigh!  I am planning on grading everything that doesn't move over the weekend; that means three labs, the Series & Parallel Circuit worksheet, another Science Starters assignment, Microscope Lesson #1, and the Microscope test from Friday.  So when you get this email on Monday, you may see a huge swing in your student's Science grade.  So here is what we have done and will do this week:

MONDAY--Students got back several assignments and we went over them in class.  NO HOMEWORK.

TUESDAY--Last day in class for students to work on their "Series & Parallel Circuit Lab".  This worksheet is HOMEWORK DUE WEDNESDAY.

WEDNESDAY--Introduction to the Microscope Unit.  Microscope Lesson #1 is HOMEWORK DUE THURSDAY.

THURSDAY--Students went over the information in Microscope Lesson #2 on the parts of a microscope and their functions.  They need to STUDY FOR TOMORROW'S TEST.

FRIDAY--MICROSCOPE TEST (Worth 60 points).  NO HOMEWORK.

Hopefully your student brought home "Microscope Lesson #2" and you are helping him/her study tonight.  The TEST ON FRIDAY will be very easy if your child studies.

We ended the "Electricity Unit" with an online simulation on Series and Parallel Circuits.  Several students did not finish this.  If so, I will be contacting you to see if your child can stay after school next week and complete this assignment.  If you have Internet access at home, your student should be able to complete it there.  Thank you in advance for your support.

Your student has been working on his/her "Student Led Conference" slide show.  Conference week is March 26-28, with Tuesday, March 26th being our evening conferences.  I love this week!  It's my second favorite after Outdoor School.  Instead of parents/guardians and teachers running the conference, this is completely the student in charge.  He/she will be explaining his/her accomplishments, goals, strengths, and weaknesses.  If you have not experienced this, you are in for a real treat.  You should have already received an email about this, and hopefully have already signed up online.  If not, please contact our Office (360-264-3644) to do so ASAP.  Those evening slots fill up quickly.  Looking forward to seeing you there.

If you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and the best email address to reach me at is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

7th Grade Science Plans for March 11-15, 2019

Greetings!

Sorry I got so far behind, but as you can see, I did get a great deal of grading caught up this weekend!  So here is what we will be doing this week:

MONDAY--Students got assignments back and we went over them in class.  NO HOMEWORK.
