Academy Plans for March 24th through 28th, 2014

Greetings!

Hope you enjoyed the nice weather weekend.  Just a reminder that there are only ten school days left in this quarter.  The last day I will accept late work, missing assignments, or extra credit is Monday, March 31st.  Also, please remember Tuesday through Thursday that week will be early release days due to conferences.  Tuesday, April 1st has been set aside for STUDENT LED CONFERENCES.  This is a required activity for all students, so please set aside time on your calendar to attend your student's conference.  Eighth graders will lead their conferences 1:30 to 3:30, and sixth & seventh graders have the 5:00 to 7:00 time slots.  Now on to this week's Academy plans:

MONDAY & TUESDAY--Students have time to work on finishing up their portfolios for their student led conferences.  The homework on Monday is the draft on the goals for each of the seven periods your student has.  This draft is due Tuesday.  Tuesday there should be ample time in class to complete the portfolio work.  The portfolios are due on Wednesday

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY--Students will make practice their presentations in class.  There will be no homework those days.

FRIDAY--(I will be gone)  I'm not sure if students will require another day of practice or not.  Either way, there will be no homework over the week-end.

I still need to put the Figurative Speech unit test scores into the grade book.  Look for those later this week; it will be worth 100 points.

Enjoy the week,
Michele Humble

Science Plans for March 24th through March 28th, 2014

Greetings!

Hope you enjoyed the nice weather this week-end.  It's hard to believe we only have two more weeks left in this quarter, and four of those ten days will be half days.  Just as a "heads up", the last day I will accept late work, missing assignments, or extra credit, is Monday, March 31st.  Hopefully your student has already been discussing the Student Led Conferences with you.  We are lucky this year because the sixth grade scheduled time is Tuesday, April 1st from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  This is a required activity for the students, so please put this into your calendar NOW.  If you would like to also schedule a "traditional" parent/teacher conference with any, or all, of your student's teachers, please contact the Office (264-3600) ASAP.  Other time slots may fill up fast.  Now on to this week's plan in Science!

MONDAY--Students will finish up Microscope Lesson #8, which is the "Dry Mount/Pond Water" lab.  It will be due at the end of the period.  Students will also turn in the Microscope Word Search which is due.  No homework.

TUESDAY--Students will do Microscope Lesson #9, which is staining specimens.  This will also be due at the end of the period and there will be no homework.

WEDNESDAY--We will go over the procedure for heating fixing and staining slides in class as a demo.  No lab, no homework.

THURSDAY--We will do Microscope Lesson #10 on heat fixing & staining.  This will be due at the end of the period.  No homework.

FRIDAY--(I will be gone)  In preparation for the Space Unit we will be begin after the Spring Break, students will watch a video on the solar system.  There will be no homework.

Just a couple of reminders:  The Microscope Unit TEST will begin on Wednesday, April 2nd, and will probably continue on to Thursday, April 3rd.  Your student should start studying NOW.  Unlike the Mixtures & Solutions Test, your student CAN study in depth for this one.  He/she should memorize the parts of the microscope and what each part does, as well as LEARN HOW TO SPELL EACH ONE.  (Yes, spelling DOES count on this one.)  Also, the steps to heat fixing & staining a slide as well as the steps to focusing a microscope.  Finally, the "big" microscope project will be on Monday, March 31st.  Each student will have one period to complete a detailed microscope drawing; this will be worth 100 points, just like the test.

Have a wonderful week,
Michele Humble

Art Plans for March 17th through 21st, 2014

Greetings!

In case your student hasn't told you, we are researching famous artists now.  Each student had the past week to research his/her famous artist.  This week we will plan for the PowerPoint presentation, then assemble it.  That will be followed with rehearsal, and next week each student will present the information on his/her artist.  Each day is worth 10 behavior points, and of course I left my clipboard at school, so I couldn't fill in last week's points.  I will try to get caught up on that tomorrow.  Please ask your student about his/her artist; he/she should be able to tell you quite a bit now, because we had three full days of researching last week.

Just a reminder that we only have three more weeks left in this quarter, so please take a close look at your student's grade, and specifically, if he/she is missing assignments.  I will be available after school this week Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday if your student needs to complete a project.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and my email address is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

Have a wonderful week,

Science Plans for March 17th through 21, 2014

Greetings!

Hooray!  I have finally completed grading the Science Notebooks!  Hopefully your student did a fine job on his/hers, and the Science grade has gone up.  I am ALMOST caught up grading everything--I still have the Poster/Rap/Story microscope lesson to go.  That should happen early this week.

Speaking of this week, here are the plans:

MONDAY--Students will get back three microscope lessons (#4 through #6) and we will go over these in class, so there will be no homework.
TUESDAY--We will do Microscope Lesson #7 on how to prepare a dry mount.  That should be completed in class and will be due at the end of the period.
WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY--We will learn how to prepare a wet mount.  This is more complicated, so this lab will take two days.  Again, no homework, but the work will be due at the end of the period on Thursday.
FRIDAY--We will watch a video on life in pond water.  This is in preparation for next week's microscope work, so no homework.

Please take a good close look at your student's grade.  There are only three weeks left in this quarter, so the time for changing his/her grade is rapidly diminishing.  I will be available after school Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week, so if you need to make arrangements for your student to stay, just let me know.  The phone number in my classroom is (360) 264-3644 and my email address is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

Have a wonderful week,
Michele Humble

Art Plans for March 10th through 14th, 2014

Greetings!

The weather is really supposed to improve this week, I hope you will be able to get out and enjoy it.  For Art this week, here are the plans:

Monday--We will be "catching up" on some projects.  This will be the last day to do this for a while, so students need to make the most of it.  Because so many students are behind on some of these projects (you may want to take a look at your student's progress report and see if he/she is one of them), I WILL BE STAYING AFTER SCHOOL TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY, & THURSDAY TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO GET CAUGHT UP.  If you want your student to take advantage of this, just let me know.  For the remainder of the week, we will be starting our "Famous Artist Research Project".  Your student will be assigned his/her artist on Tuesday, so you will want to ask who he/she has.  We will be researching Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  IT'S GREAT WITH ME IF YOUR STUDENT WANTS TO DO SOME RESEARCH AT HOME--in fact, I would encourage it.  Next week we will take all of those facts and get started doing something with them.

Just a reminder:  Wednesday, March 12th is a "Late Start Day", so you will want to plan accordingly.  As always, please contact me (Classroom phone:  (360) 264-3644 or email:  humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us) with any of your questions, comments, or concerns.

Enjoy the week,
Michele Humble

Science & Academy Plans for the Week of March 10th through 14th, 2014

Greetings!

One more class to go on Science Notebooks (2nd period); I'm hoping to be done by Thursday.  As you can see, the Microscope Lesson #1 and Microscope Magnification worksheet have been added as well, so there may have been a large change in your student's grade--hopefully upward.  Now here are the plans for this week:

SCIENCE--No homework Monday, we're going over assignments that were turned in last week.  Tuesday we will do a lab in class, and it will be due Wednesday.  Wednesday (Late Start Day) we will be watching a video on microscopic life.  Thursday is another microscope lab, so that will be due Friday.  And Friday we will be going over the Mixtures & Solutions Test as well as the Science Notebook.  So now real "homework" in Science this week, but DO make sure your student turns in those assignments from the labs.

ACADEMY--We will be doing Lit Log Entry #7 in class, so no homework on that.  We are starting our poetry unit, so we will be reading and analyzing poetry a lot in class this week through a variety of activities.  So no real "take home homework" in Academy this week.

Don't forget that Wednesday, March 12th is a LATE START DAY this week.  As always, please contact me (Classroom phone:  (360) 264-3644 or email:  humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us) with your concerns or comments.

The weather is supposed to improve, so I hope you are able to enjoy it.  Have a wonderful week,
Michele Humble

Art Plans for the Week of March 3-7, 2014

Greetings!

As you can see, we've been busy.  Here are the plans for this week:

Monday--I had planned to start our monochromatic scheme painting, but with more than 20% of the class gone, I decided to make it a "catch up day".  That really paid off--students got a lot done today.
Tuesday & Wednesday--We will start our monochromatic scheme tempera painting project.  I hope to get this done in two days, but it may take longer.
Thursday & Friday--We will review the five kinds of line, then will start our scratch art project.  This will also take at least two days.

As usual, no homework in Art this week, but if your student is behind on any assignments, I will be staying after school both Wednesday & Thursday, so please feel free to have your student stay after on either or both of those days to get caught up.  Please feel free to contact me by phone at (360) 264-3644 or email at humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

Have a great week,
Michele Humble

Academy for the Week of March 3-7, 2014

Greetings!

Phew!  I'm all caught up on Academy grading.  As you can see, there's probably a huge difference from last week.  We are winding up our Figurative Speech unit, and will be taking a test on that this week.  Here are the plans for this week--

Monday:  No homework.  Lit Log entries only.  But please start reviewing with your student for the Figurative Speech TEST ON THURSDAY.  (Your student should have all of his/her handouts.)
Tuesday:  Students will get back and we will go over the remaining Figurative Speech worksheets they had turned in.  We will also do Lit Log entries.
Wednesday:  Students will be doing the REVIEW ASSIGNMENT for the Figurative Speech unit.  Although students will have the class period to work on this, whatever is not completed in class will be homework, due Thursday.
Thursday:  TEST DAY!
Friday: No homework.  Lit Log entries only.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.  My phone number is (360) 264-3644 and my email address is humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

Have a great week,
Michele Humble
Greetings!

Well, I'm making progress.  As you can see, the Mixtures & Solutions Test scores are posted, and the Chapter 2 worksheets we corrected last week is here.  I hope to have the Parts of a Microscope quiz posted by tomorrow as well as the Microscope Lesson #1 assignment.  I will know begin to work on the Science Notebooks, another 100 point assignment.  I was very disappointed in the number of students who did not turn in the Chapter 2 work.  Please look very carefully at your student's progress report.  If that Chapter 2 worksheets assignment is missing, you will probably be receiving a phone call tomorrow asking if YOUR STUDENT CAN STAY AFTER SCHOOL EITHER WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY TO GET IT COMPLETED & CORRECTED.  By now our sixth graders should be taking their academic responsibilities more seriously, and getting their homework turned in.  Although time consuming, this was not a difficult assignment, and one that could be completed at home with simply the textbook.  Students had 2 1/2 class periods to work on this, so I think you can see why I am disappointed.  I know that many of my students DID take this seriously, and not only completed the work on time, but did an admirable job on it.  With a work ethic like that, they will be well prepared for the amount of homework they will receive next year.

Now, on to this week's plans in Science--

Monday:  We took the quiz on the parts of a microscope, and introduced carrying, cleaning, and storing a microscope.
Tuesday & Wednesday:  Students will have two class days to work on the homework assignment.  They may choose to do a poster, story, or rap on microscope care.  On those days they will also be doing a "lab practical test", where they show me they know how to carry, clean, & store a microscope.
Thursday:  Students will watch a movie on microscopes & microscopic animals along with a HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT--Microscope Lesson #4.  This is very short and will be due on Friday.
Friday:  Students will get back & go over the Mixtures & Solutions Test.  There will be no homework.

Please contact me if you have any questions and/or concerns.  The phone number in my classroom is: (360) 264-3644 and my email address is:  humblem@tenino.k12.wa.us

As always, have a wonderful week,
Michele Humble
